Two Oceans Marine Manufacturing’s Johan de Swardt and Lorato Motshabi won the prestigious Rising Talent awards for Composites and Women in Boatbuilding at the 2023 South African Boat Builders Export Council Awards.

The theme/title of the 2023 awards was “On the Shoulders of Giants”. The South African Boatbuilders Export Council 2023 Annual Industry Awards Dinner recognises people who are masters in their field who have nurtured talent (Giants) and to recognise the rising talent who have made that expertise their own, got to see further and opened new doors to possibility.

The awards function was attended by 300 professionals from the South African Boatbuilding industry.

The Rising Talent category celebrates this innovation  and acknowledges emerging talent that has built upon the expertise of their predecessors, enabling them to see further and open new doors to possibility.

Johan and Lorato were presented their awards by Alderman James Vos, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth at the City of Cape Town.

Johan de Swardt was awarded the Rising Talent Award in the Composites Category.

Johan is a skilled composite production manager at at his company, overseeing specialised composite work, infusion, and bespoke carbon projects. With a string background in boatbuilding and a passion for perfection, he has continually honed his craft and expanded the company’s capabilities since joining in 2020. He has successfully trained and mentored teams, enabling the yard to handle all carbon work in-house and take on challenging composite projects.

Johan’s impressive growth in the field of composites within a short time frame and his dedication to excellence make him a rising talent with a promising future in the industry.

Lorato Motshabi was awarded the Rising Talent Award in the Women in Boatbuilding category.

Lorato is 25 years old and works in lamination and infusion. She attended False Bay College, qualifying in boat building. After she completed her training, she was offered a permanent position at Two Oceans Marine, and over the last 2-3 years she has proved to be a real rising talent. She has caught the attention of all the managers with her commitment, her willingness and ability to continually learn and perfect her craft and has vast potential as an exceptional boatbuilder.

Her attention to detail is very good, and her bright smile and positive, can-do attitude makes her a joy to work with and motivates her colleagues. She has fantastic potential to go very far in the world of boat building and she is a true Rising Talent  in our eyes.
