Two Oceans Marine Launches 7th Offshore Rescue Craft for the National Sea Rescue Institute
Cape Town, South Africa | Two Oceans Marine Manufacturing has proudly launched the seventh Class 1 Offshore Rescue Craft (ORC), RESCUE 4, built for the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) on the 16th of February 2026.
Commissioned as part of the NSRI’s new fleet of eight Class 1 Offshore Rescue Craft, the ORC 140 represents the next generation of world-class search and rescue capability for South Africa’s coastline. Following sea trials, RESCUE 4 will head to her home base at NSRI Station 4, Mykonos, where she will stand ready to respond — whatever the conditions.
Designed by Pantocarene Naval Architects, the ORC 140 concept was first envisioned nearly two decades ago as a vessel capable of operating in severe offshore environments. Continuous refinement over the years has resulted in the advanced ORC 140 platform now purpose-built for the NSRI. Numerous pilot and search-and-rescue vessels based on this design are already successfully operating in demanding conditions.
At 14.8 metres in length and 4.8 metres in beam, the self-righting ORC 140 is engineered for rescue missions up to 50 nautical miles (over 92 kilometres) offshore. Designed for a service life of at least 40 years, the vessel underscores a long-term commitment to maritime safety.
Crew and survivor protection remain paramount. The ORC 140 accommodates six volunteer rescuers in shock-mitigating seats, enabling high-speed response in rough seas, and has capacity to carry up to 23 survivors. Equipped with the latest electronic navigation and communication systems, and featuring full self-righting capability, the vessel delivers enhanced safety for both crew and casualties in extreme conditions.
“This launch marks another milestone in our longstanding partnership with the NSRI,” says Two Oceans Marine Manufacturing. “Each ORC we deliver represents not only advanced engineering and craftsmanship, but also our shared commitment to safeguarding lives at sea.”
With sea trials imminent and commissioning to follow, RESCUE 4 is poised to continue the NSRI’s vital mission — answering the call when it matters most.
